When Yegor Shishkovsky was
only 17 he became Russia's
youngest radio DJ to
present the very first programme
to concentrate wholly on
Western music. That was
still in
the
Soviet years and
the censorship was tough -
"they
would allow Billy
Bragg
because of his
socialist views but they
didn't like Madonna or
Michael Jackson". Since
then Yegor established
himself as one of Russia's
most influential and
respected music
broadcasters who had a
deep knowledge of Western
pop and rock music.
When
Yegor moved to
London and launched in
1995 his new show "Live
From The West" his
position was
strengthen - he now
had a chance not only to
talk about pop stars but
also to
interview then.
This was something
completely new for Russian
listeners. Over the years
Yegor interviewed everyone
from Madonna, Celine Dion,
Robbie Williams and
Victoria Beckham to Blue,
Texas and Moby. For many
people, especially in
remote corners of Russia
his show was a unique
opportunity to hear the
latest news and music
first. When closing down
the show after more than
seven successful years
Yegor
said: "The end is
certainly sad, but I’m
sure that sooner or later
I’ll be back on air in
Russia. I love radio and
therefore returning is
only a matter of time".
